Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a non-toxic, colorless solution made of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. While not a fuel or fuel additive, DEF is stored in a separate tank and injected into the exhaust stream, where it reacts with NOx emissions to convert them into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

NOx emissions — including nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) — are significant contributors to smog, acid rain, and respiratory health issues. SCR systems rely on DEF to neutralize these pollutants and meet stringent environmental regulations.

Today’s EPA emissions standards cap NOx output at 0.2 grams per brake horsepower-hour (g/bhp-hr). By 2027, new regulations will require an additional 90% reduction, pushing limits to just 0.02 g/bhp-hr. This shift will significantly increase the importance and use of DEF in diesel engines across industries.
