  • Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a non-toxic, colorless solution made of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. While not a fuel or fuel additive, DEF is stored in a separate tank and injected into the exhaust stream, where it reacts with NOx emissions to convert them into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

  • NOx emissions — including nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) — are significant contributors to smog, acid rain, and respiratory health issues. SCR systems rely on DEF to neutralize these pollutants and meet stringent environmental regulations.

  • Today’s EPA emissions standards cap NOx output at 0.2 grams per brake horsepower-hour (g/bhp-hr). By 2027, new regulations will require an additional 90% reduction, pushing limits to just 0.02 g/bhp-hr. This shift will significantly increase the importance and use of DEF in diesel engines across industries.
